Farm House & Barn Conversion

With a history dating back to the 1600s, four separate English Heritage Grade II listings and a location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Spring House needed a sensitive but creative touch.
We worked closely with our clients on this substantial refurbishment and extension of a farmhouse and complex of farm buildings to turn them into a cohesive and handsome home for a growing modern family.
The farmhouse itself hadn't been touched for more than 30 years, so we focused on altering the rooms carefully to reflect the needs of a modern family.
Today, the spacious living areas and a large kitchen extend into the neighbouring barn, linked by a new glazed insertion. The first floor of the dairy off-shot has been reinstated to create an en-suite to the master bedroom.
We also brought the attic storey of the farmhouse into use, creating a new space that makes striking use of the historic beams.
Our architectural design for this home used two distinct but complementary design treatments for the refurbishment of the original house and for the conversion of the previously uninhabited barn spaces.
Extensive fabric repairs to the historic farmhouse and barn included repointing the elevations and completely re-roofing both structures with the original stone slates.
Our work at Spring House continues: we're currently working with the client on a wider masterplan for the farm, exploring alternative energy sources and converting further redundant barns.
