Our specialist conservation team oversaw the successful submission of a Listed Building Consent application for repair works to the windows at the Grade I listed Harewood House in West Yorkshire.
The programme of works prioritised areas in the greatest need of repair, ensuring the long-term protection of this important heritage asset.
Repairs involved removing decayed timber and splicing in replacement timber sections, and where possible, original sash windows were rebalanced to restore their intended function, replacing sash cords and mechanisms where necessary.
As the most recent layers of paint were non-porous, it was decided that the windows would not be stripped as this would remove the layers of history which act as an archaeological record of the building’s development.
PBA worked closely with timber specialists and paint analysts throughout the project.
