Conservation and Heritage

Conservation work is a very important part of our service provision, from projects in conservation areas, featured on Historic England’s grades II, II* and I list, on scheduled ancient monuments and in historic parks and gardens. We have successfully submitted buildings for inclusion on Historic England’s list and have worked directly for English Heritage.

Residential Architecture

Pearce Bottomley Architects are an award-winning, high-end residential architectural practice based in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. Formed in 1958 and with a history traceable to 1888 as a chartered architectural practice, we follow the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Plan of Work, ensuring a structured and transparent approach to every project. With a proven track record across the residential sector, our clients trust us to guide them through each stage of the design and construction process, from initial concept to completion.

Residential Architectural Design

We know that every home is individual, and we also know that individuals evolve – families grow, and families shrink. We feel that a home needs to evolve with its owners. We understand that work to any home can be a huge investment both in time and money. We work hard to make sure that you get the best value for your money, and that the projects run as smoothly as possible with minimal disruption to your life. We have the experience of working with a variety of budgets and with a range of different house types and sizes – nothing is too small or too big. We believe that it is the small details that make a house a home and we will work closely with you to make sure they are right.

Residential Extensions and Refurbishments

We know from experience that it is difficult to find a ‘dream home’ – there is always a compromise somewhere. However, by working within your existing home, by refurbishing, reconfiguring or extending, we can help you achieve your dream home. Not only can we design a home that evolves with you, creating a strategy that responds to your changing needs, but we can also add value to it.

Rather than create a homogenous ‘re-vamp’ of a house, we will often craft isolated interventions as part of a wider strategy so that different spaces work for your specific needs.

New Build Homes

We understand that building a new home is quite an endeavour, regardless of size of plot or budget available. With so many aspects to take into consideration and many limiting factors, our aim is to listen to your needs, priorities and expectations, and help to create a beautiful, practical and responsive brief to meet all of your requirements. Whether traditionally constructed or contemporary, with added swimming pools or a bigger kitchen, we have the experience to work with you to build your own home.

Residential Conversions

Home does not need to mean a typical house. What you call home could have had a previous life, such as a barn, mill or even an office. This often results in a home with unusual features and a vibrant history – something a little out of the ordinary. Above all, the re-use of an existing building is inherently sustainable. However, converting buildings into homes can be challenging. Some have a greater capacity to accommodate change, whilst others are so historically significant that an intervention must be as subtle as possible. Either way, we relish the challenge, and we will work with you to realise a home from a building. We have converted numerous barns and farmsteads into new homes in a variety of locations, including village centres and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Heritage Homes

We recognise the privilege of owning a historic home and the responsibility of its upkeep and alteration. Our policy is to develop ideas with clients, advising on how to achieve results with the minimum of disturbance to the historic fabric. We also work closely with Conservation Officers and, where necessary, Historic England, from the start of a project. This is to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the proposed development and that there is a balance between the historical importance of a building and the needs of twenty-first-century life. We have the experience and knowledge of the planning system to get the best result for your heritage building and have, over the years, developed close relationships with Local Authorities and heritage organisations.
