This was Harrogate Harrier Andy’s 16th Great North Run which took place on Sunday 8th September. He was running for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), which raises money to seek a cure and research treatment for Type 1 diabetes.
Andy’s daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2019. Having a child with Type 1 affects the whole family, with Elizabeth requiring daily insulin injections alongside insulin with food. Every day is a balancing act, with the lethal risk of low blood sugar levels alongside both short and long term risks from high blood sugar levels.
Andy said: “Running a half marathon is always hard, but running it in fancy dress as a dinosaur is a whole other level, and I hope to avoid becoming extinct as a result of my efforts! My running Club, Harrogate Harriers fully support my effort and organised a recent Handicap when I set off first, with the rest of the Harriers released in order of ability, with the aim to ‘catch the dinosaur’. It got the fundraising off to a great start and we had fun!”
In fact Andy ended up raising over £800.00 for JDRF. The standout achievement was that he completed in the inflatable costume and admitted that he has a new found realisation as to why dinosaurs became extinct! It was tough running and his time was 2hrs12mins, about half an hour outside his personal best time.
We are impressed! Absolutely no dinosaur himself Andy just gets on with things in work and life and despite the adverse weather he enjoyed the whole experience and being able to make his donation.
