Hotel Conversion with a Socially Ethical Ethos

The current Wesley in Euston is known as the first ethical hotel in the UK, for a number of reasons:

  • Receiving the unique accolade of the Social Enterprise Mark in 2010;

  • For supporting over 10,000 international students for over 65 years;

  • For strong environmental and sustainable credentials, embodied by accreditations such as ISO14001, Green Tourism and BREEAM ratings.

The Wesley fulfils a unique gap in the market, being the hotel of choice for the ethically minded or more discerning traveller. Oxford place aims to continue the ethical ethos of the Wesley, Euston, and build upon it.

Initial designs were prepared as part of a feasibility study, establishing the possibility of a change of use of the building to form a circa 70 bedroom hotel. The viability of the scheme was dependent on the principle of façade retention, which informed the proposals. The scheme looks to clear out the internal interventions to The Oxford Place that were made in the late twentieth century, and construct a new independent structure to support the walls and floor as the existing is deemed unsuitable.

The proposal is for the restoration and conversion of the existing Grade II listed building to create a luxury 4* hotel, restaurant and meeting spaces in the city centre of Leeds. The restaurant will have external seating within a sunken garden to the south side.

The design for Oxford Place incorporates a full height atrium which will reveal the original scale of the building’s interior – not seen since the 1970’s remodelling of the chapel.

Planning consent and Listed Building Consent were obtained in June 2018 and technical design of the works is now underway.

All profits derived from the hotel will be gifted back to the Methodist Church as a charitable donation to assist in the national work of the denomination.

It is intended that profits will be used to support a more effective and developing mission projects within the city centre.
