Blacker Hall Farm Shop is a unique business, selling locally grown produce and meat, which is prepared for sale in the integral farm shop.
The Malthouse is Grade II* on Historic England’s list for England and is currently on the Heritage at Risk Register following the theft of the roofing slates. The building was formally constructed as a dedicated Malthouse for the farm complex and surrounding area and consists of a two storey stone built structure, with a partly collapsed roof and the remains of the original lime ash floor over original beams and joists. There is an adjacent later stone built Kilnhouse which is being refurbished as part of the works.
Pearce Bottomley were first appointed for the restoration works to the Malthouse in 2012 as conservation and heritage specialists. Extensive investigation works have been undertaken to determine the deteriorating state of the building, and every measure has been taken through the design to retain the existing fabric as far as possible.
The works to the Malthouse include its restoration and change of use to office accommodation. This will provide a long term use for the property with the minimum possible impact on the existing structure, making a positive contribution and ensuring the survival of this heritage asset.
The extension to the farm shop is a sensitive lightweight addition to the Grade II listed south barn. Its design enhances the existing farm courtyard, with a low line roof. This will provide additional floor area for the popular café, without detracting from the historic building.
The works also include for upgrading the existing car parking, as well as extensions to the existing farm shop and production units. These are designed in line with the adjacent Grade II listed south barn and farm house. This will allow increased production of locally grown produce for sale on site.
